Moles are furry creatures which eat insects, grubs and worms. They are actually beneficial for they help in pest control naturally by eating insects. They also dig underneath building tunnels by turning out and aerating the soil. They are still considered a nuisance for they can make your beautiful garden and lawn ugly with mounds of earth. A solitary mole can create havoc. They also move plants and roots when tunneling. Poisoning or trapping them is not an appealing option. A more humane way of getting rid of them without killing is by making the ground smell and taste bad to them. They are attracted to wet and cool surfaces. Using chemical fertilizers and not drenching the lawn may help.
First and foremost it is important to know whether the mound of dirt is caused by Los Angeles moles or gophers. Moles dig tunnels and eat the insects, grubs and worms that fall into the tunnel. Gophers feed on plants. Gopher’s tunnel has a plug blocking the entrance. They also have crescent shaped dirt hills.
1 Mole repellent spray
Moles are repelled by some distinct smells and taste. Mole repellent sprays affect the taste of insects drenched in the spray. Los Angeles moles find them bitter and do not like the taste. With the source of food reduced they leave your yard and relocate. You can make your own spray. Mix ¼ cup castor oil with 2tbsp of dish soap. Add ¼ cup of water and mix well in a blender. Store this concentrate solution in a sealed container. Whenever needed add 2 tbsp of this solution to a gallon of water. Fill spray containers and spray thoroughly all over the yard and pour into tunnels and visible holes. Other repellents like powdered chilly, cayenne pepper; Tabasco sauce etc can be added. Moles are very adaptive and get used to difficult environments. Frequently changing ingredients and altering them will prevent them from getting used to these repellents.
2 Growing deterrent plants
Moles detest the smell of daffodils and marigolds. Having these plants in your garden or around hedges will prevent moles from coming to those areas. There is another added advantage. Daffodils and Marigolds look pretty and enhance the beauty of your garden.
3 Mole predators
Having cats and dogs frighten California moles. They retreat from your garden and try get away. Cat litter is also a deterrent. They can be poured into holes and tunnels and moles never return to that place.
Owls are also natural predators and hunt moles. Having a nest box nearby may cause an owl to settle.
4 Vibrating Stakes
Solar and battery powered vibrators sticks are available. They can be stuck into mole holes and tunnels. Moles do not like the vibration and sound.
5 Underground barriers
Building an underground barrier around the perimeter of your garden is necessary. This is to prevent re-entry of Los Angeles moles. The barrier must be 30 inches deep and 6 inches above the surface.
